To me BOTW is a game that could have been better even though its great, most Zelda games have a similar story and a formula that is associated with each game however BOTW plays much more like an Elder Scrolls game than a Zelda... What I mainly look for in a game is a good story (and that is why I love the last of us), this game had bits of a story but never truly delivered; after about the 15-20 hour mark I was kinda done with the game as it gave me very little motivation to carry on, I did eventually finish the game but the ending to me felt empty and underwhelming, I am not hating on the game because I simply love it but I hope that the next Zelda game does have a better story or at least something to keep you engaged, what do you guys think and how did you find the game? Please do let me know because I want to restart the game to hopefully get a different opinion on the game and maybe love it as most people do.
</p><p>Consider Breath of the Wild as a test. They've spent 6 years, and most has gone down to perfecting the engine. Now that they have that down, at least they'll be able to focus on the story more (and I hope they don't mess up localization again)</p>
I say that their main focus was kids and families as that was their main goal with the wii u and most older Nintendo console, sure the switch deviated from that but look at games like yoshi's crated world... You cant tell me the targed demographic was adults when they were developing the game, I agree that they were testing out new zelda formulas and I hope the next game is on the same engine but has a better story, it has taken a long time for Nintendo to get back into the home console market (specially after the disaster that was the wii u)... I gues they tried to fix the story with dlc but that was to me also underwhelming specially after the hype and how this game was supposedly going to be the best zelda game ever.

I don't understand why BotW is ways associated to the Elder Scrolls series. Yeah they are two open world game, that's pretty much where the resemblance ends. Almost no customisation in BotW (which is a huge thing for the elder scrolls).
But I agree, BotW could have EASILY be MUCH better. If only it had really taken more attributes from the Elder Scrolls series.
I made the comparison as both games really do let you do what you want when your want but the problem is that in Skyrim you always have a backstory to every character you meet but not so much in BOTW some characters have an affiliation with you but you dont have your memory, some more back story would have been nice

</p><p>Also, Nintendo wasn't really that far from the home console market. The Wii U only had a life of five years, compared to most consoles with six or more, and the Wii, despite having slower sales in its later years, gained massive success over the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 combined. </p><p>
</p><p>I can actually agree with you on the DLC though. While it did fill in some plot, DLC 1 just did nothing except signal the fact that Fi was playing a role in the game, and DLC 2 just made the game look finished with the "The End" scene that the base game didn't have for some reason.</p><p>
</p><p>@Ben H. Clement</p><p>Actually, more than you think. In fact, Nintendo has done research on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and some of the developers spent time playing it to get ideas of what their own open-world game would be like.</p><p>

Yes, I dont say they have nothing in common. But it is really not that much. For someone who have played a lot of elder scrolls (mostly Oblivion and Skyrim) in my opinion BotW has as much in common with the Elder Scroll series as it have with Ocarina of Time. And it doesn't really have that much in common with Ocarine of Time.
BOTW is amazing, however the feeling that you're truly playing a Zelda game is kinda gone
but tbh It's the only reason why I bought myself a switch
