In the final days of Zeldapedia, I promised to make a bunch of Discussion posts. Here I am with the worst things with Breath of the Wild.
5. Lag
I've played both versions. I've seen lag on both versions. Did Nintendo really screw this up? I'm trying to drive the Master Cycle Zero, and then suddenly the entire game stops because it has to load!? This was on the Switch version too! Believe it or not, I literally just rode my Master Cycle Zero through the Hyrule Castle Main Road, first time in the game, and there were absolutely no obstacles. No barriers or Lynels. Now that's pretty bad.
How about the Wii U version? It lags in busy locations, and it lags when you have a lot of activity on the screen. For a game that's designed for the Wii U, what the hell? For Nintendo standards, this doesn't even come close. Yes, it's still playable, but most other Wii U games performed better, and those came before BotW.
4. Nintendo Labo VR Kit compatibility
I tried it, Day 1 (the night when Avengers: Endgame premiered). What were my thoughts? It was absolute crap. The motion controls are god awful; they don't light up well with the Gyroscopes, so you won't get fluent motion.
Try ZL-targeting. You do that, and VR just goes away. No ability to look around even just slightly, unlike the 3DS remasters which allowed you to look around while L-targeting.
The gameplay is at 30 FPS. Why is 30 FPS bad? It's not good for VR, and you can easily get sick. How about looking at the game in 480p resolution? It's not BAD, because it's the same resolution as the Wii U GamePad, but looking at it close up is not the nicest thing.
Even worse, take a guess what happens when you're in VR mode, doing a Gyroscope Shrine? Yeah, you don't use the analog sticks. You still use freaking motion controls. So... have fun getting motion sickness.
3. The Master Trials
Let's be honest here. Why should anyone be paying money for The Master Trials DLC? Take a look at what it has. Master Mode, which is the equivalent to Second Quest, Master Quest, and Hero Mode. Those were all free. It has the Trial of the Sword, which is the equivalent to the Cave of Ordeals and Treacherous Tower. Those were free. So my question is, why are we paying for stuff that we shouldn't pay for. Sure, it's fun to play, but do you really have to lock it behind the Expansion Pass if it should've been in the base game? I sacrificed my potential SSBU Fighter Pass money for this.
2. Wii U Flaws
The Wii U version was OK. It had everything you needed, and it originally had faster loading times than the Switch version. What were its problems? Press the Home button and exit the Home menu after that. You have to wait about 30 seconds for the game to load up again for it to work. For a game made for the Wii U... WHY???
How about you try using the Pro Controller. Go to a Gyroscope Shrine and try solving it...uh oh. The controller doesn't have a Gyroscope! What do you do!? Put down your controller, grab your Wii U GamePad, solve the puzzle, put back the Wii U GamePad, and pick up your controller. If you screwed up the puzzle, do it again. Seriously, what's with this design flaw? Why couldn't they bring in that Splatoon trick where you attach a Wii Motion Plus/Remote Plus? Better yet, why make it so that you HAVE to use motion controls? They seriously did not think this through.
1. Gyroscope Shrines
People hated the Water Temple more, but it's primarily because they skipped the 3D remaster and didn't realize how it was so easy on that version. Gyroscope Shrines are the worst thing in BotW. What's wrong about it? See the reasons above. Not convinced enough?
Play it on the Wii U GamePad screen, or play it on the Switch in Handheld mode. How in the world are you supposed to accomplish that!? Keep in mind, while there are only 3 Shrines that require motion controls, there are 4 more DLC Shrines! I had to go through the entire DLC in Handheld mode, and these Shrines took up the most time.
With Wii U flaws, crappy VR, and overall forced motion controls, this is the biggest design flaw I've seen.
What are the things that you hate the most about Breath of the Wild?
