amiibo are a product created by Nintendo as accessories for the Wii U and Nintendo Switch home consoles and the Nintendo 3DS family of handheld systems. amiibo are small figures made in the image of various video game characters from games on Nintendo system. A figure's base contains readable (and in some cases, writable) near field communication (NFC) data, which can be scanned using a Nintendo system's dedicated NFC feature to unlock or activate various features in selected games. On the Wii U, the GamePad incorporates an NFC reader, located directly underneath the D-pad and indicated by a special icon. The New Nintendo 3DS features an NFC reader underneath the touch screen, requiring players to place their amiibo on the screen. Other 3DS family devices require the use of a dedicated scanning device, sold separately. On the Nintendo Switch, the NFC reader is hidden within the right Joy-Con, and is reads amiibo by having them held over the analog stick. Since NFC data is stored in a figurine's base, no ill effect will occur should the figure itself somehow become detached from its base.
In Breath of the Wild, Link can use a Rune on his Sheikah Slate, the amiibo Rune. By using an amiibo figures and this Rune function, special characters such as Wolf Link or Epona can be summoned, or several items and a Treasure Chest can appear around Link.

The figurine represents Midna riding Wolf Link.
The Wolf Link amiibo is compatible with Breath of the Wild. In the Breath of the Wild E3 Demo, a special amiibo Rune of the Sheikah Slate was revealed which allows Link to scan compatible amiibo and activate their effects in-game. This Rune summons Wolf Link as an AI partner for Link when the Wolf Link amiibo is scanned. By default, Wolf Link will have three hearts. It is possible to increase the number of hearts by completing the Cave of Shadows in Twilight Princess HD. A message appears on floors 6, 20, and 40 asking Wolf Link to save the game. The prompt only appears on floors 6 and 20 once per save file. On floor 40, however, the prompt always appears if Wolf Link has more remaining health than the previous save. The amount of hearts Wolf Link has at the time of saving will be transferable to Breath of the Wild. In order for Wolf Link to have the maximum amount of health, he must have full hearts before saving. Save prompts appear when Wolf Link has more hearts than the previous save. For example, if Wolf Link completes Floor 6 with 20 hearts, then completes Floor 20, the game will not prompt for a transfer of data for the amiibo.
This amiibo is also compatible with Hyrule Warriors Legends, in which it summons a random weapon for use by Midna.
