Quest items

Throughout The Legend of Zelda series, quest items have been regularly collected by the iconic protagonist, Link, to aid him in his adventures. Though unusable to the player, the items advance the plot of any particular game in the series by opening new areas to explore or revealing significant plot details. With notable exceptions, three quest items are typically gathered together at the beginning of Link's adventure, and several more are collected thereafter (e.g. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess). If this is not the case, then may also be eight items collected throughout the game (e.g. The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons).
