— In-game description

The Fairy Slingshot is an item from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This projectile weapon is the treasure of the first dungeon, Inside the Deku Tree. The Fairy Slingshot can be used to defeat or stun enemies or hit far-off targets. Each shot is as strong as a basic slash from the Kokiri Sword. Link can only use the Fairy Slingshot as a child; when he is an adult, it is too small for him to use, and is replaced by the superior Fairy Bow. The ammunition used for the Fairy Slingshot are Deku Seeds, which can be purchased in shops, found when Link defeats a Deku Baba without cutting its stem, or located beneath bushes, rocks, or grass.

Fairy Slingshot (Third-Person View)

The Fairy Slingshot is used by pressing the button to which it is equipped in order to ready the shot, and then release the button when the target is situated where the seed will land; the Fairy Slingshot has a fairly long range, and its projectiles do not arc in flight. When used in first-person view mode, Link must manually aim his shot at his target without the aid of a targeting reticle, although the point of impact may be triangulated by using the Slingshot itself as a visual points of reference. When Link uses Z-targeting, during which all actions are performed in third-person view mode, he is able to lock on to the target, which will almost always result in an accurate hit; however, some rapidly moving targets may occasionally require manual aim.

Link can receive two upgrades for the Deku Seeds Bullet Bag, in which Deku Seeds are stored; one is given to Link by a Deku Scrub if he hits the center of a target found in the Lost Woods three times. The other is given to Link if he successfully hits every single Rupee target in the Shooting Gallery in Hyrule Castle Town. These upgrades can be obtained in any order.

After a fight with Mido, Link shows a slingshot that is most likely the Fairy Slingshot to Saria. He teaches Saria what it is used for and demonstrates. When Saria tries it herself, she hits Mido with a rock. Link also uses it to fight Queen Gohma inside the Great Deku Tree.

Link rarely uses his Slingshot after the fight in the Deku Tree. However, he uses it while playing with Princess Zelda in the shooting range. He also mentions it during the fight with King Dodongo, saying that his Slingshot won't help against the dragon.
