Bears are an animal species from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. They are respectively native to Koholint Island and Hyrule.

Appearances[]

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[]

Chef Bear is a anthropomorphic bear who lives at Animal Village on Koholint Island. He is a chef who dreams of opening a restaurant at Mabe Village. However he disappears along with most of the inhabitants of Koholint after Link wakes up the Wind Fish. His anthropomorphic nature may be due to his existence in the Wind Fish's dream.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild[]

"The king among animals is dangerous game for even the most seasoned hunters. They'll attack anyone who wanders into their territory regardless of the wanderer's weaponry. As their name implies, they have a natural love of honey. Extreme caution is advised when you spot one, but if you're sneaky enough and maybe just a little bit crazy... you might just be able to ride one."
— Hyrule Compendium

In Breath of the Wild, bears are wild animals that are found across Hyrule. They are hostile towards Link and will attack him. Link can hunt them for food to obtain high grade Raw Prime Meat and Raw Gourmet Meat. There are two species of bear; Honeyvore Bears and Grizzlemaw Bears. Honeyvore bears occasionally drop Courser Bee Honey, while Grizzlemaw Bears occasionally drop Hearty Salmon.

Honeyvore bears can be found mainly in the Akkala Highlands and Tabantha Frontier regions, though they also appear in Hickaly Woods in West Necluda. Grizzlemaw Bears inhabit cold regions such as Gerudo Highlands and Hebra Mountains. Gerudo Highlands is the only region where both subspecies can be found.

Bears are one of the wild animals that Link can mount and ride like a horse. Link can either sneak up on bears like for horses, or mount them while trying to flee. Once mounted, Link can tame it by soothing it. Once tamed, Link can ride it like a horse, though it lacks spurs preventing it from galloping. They are generally slower than horses and cannot sidestep. They will occasionally try to throw Link off, forcing him to soothe them again to regain control. Bears will automatically follow paths like fully bonded horses, and Link can attack with bows and melee weapons while riding them. People will act fearful or hostile if Link rides one near them. Bears cannot be registered at Stables, the clerks will refuse as they are not horses and can never be completely tamed. When Link gets off the bear, it will run away. Interestingly in Meadela's Mantle in the Gerudo Highlands region, Bokoblins have tamed Honeyvore and Grizzlemaw Bears to use as riding mounts while hunting Tabantha Moose and Great-Horned Rhinoceros.
