- "Hoy! Hold it right there, small fry! I don't know where you got your mitts on that Sea Chart you got there... But it looks to me like it's pretty much got nothing but seas drawn on it! It's pathetic! In fact, it's almost an insult to call that thing a Sea Chart, if you ask me! What's the matter, small fry? I'm just trying to be nice here! I'm telling you that you've got a problem. And you do. Don't give me that stupefied look! It makes you look like you oughta be in diapers! Just listen, OK? I'm here to teach you what I know about this island, so open up your Sea Chart! And make it snappy!"
- — Fishman
Fishmen are characters from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. They are found in the Great Sea, and they are depicted as fish with human-like faces. If Link pours All-Purpose Bait in the Great Sea while near a Fishman, it will surface and eat the bait. As a reward, they will paint the nearby island on Link's Sea Chart and give him information about the area as well. In the water, a Fishman is a silhouette of a fish. Some time in the past, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule helped them out and this is the reason they are willing to help Link. The Fishmen refer to him only as a boat though, indicating that they either only knew him as the King of Red Lions, or they know his true identity but are keeping it secret. For some unknown reason, Loot the sailor seems to think of them as evil. They also informed the King of Red Lions about the Forsaken Fortress being deserted, and were glad at the news, although the King of Red Lions was largely disturbed upon this revelation due to the inherent implications behind it.
Interestingly, it is slightly implied throughout the course of the game that one of the Fishmen dated Gillian of the Cafe Bar in the past.
Locations[]
Fishmen are located near every island throughout the Great Sea. They can be found all around islands, but most of the time they are only near inhabited parts of the island, which is where they expect Link is likely to be. For example, the Fishman at the Forest Haven is more likely to be near the entrance than swimming around the Forbidden Woods.
Fishmen can be seen jumping in the air and splashing around before Link gets near them, presumably trying to get his attention. In fact, the best way to spot them is not by the fish itself, but by its splash. Once Link has sailed close enough, the Fishman will come swimming up to and around the boat when Link is close enough to L-Target him. Link should drop the bait only when the Fishman is swimming around the boat, or the bait will go to waste.
After Link receives the Hero's Bow, he can play a special mini-game by feeding a Fishman that has already been met before.
