"The Flames of Sorrow and Destruction burn brightly! Only the Flame of Despair remains! Eee hee hee hee! When the three flames are lit, we will offer the sacrifice and complete the Dark Rites. Then the Evil King shall return!"
Twinrova

The Flames of the Dark Rites, which include the Flame of Sorrow, the Flame of Destruction, and the Flame of Despair, appear in the The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons and are found within the Room of Rites. While their full purpose is revealed only in a Linked Game, their use is very important to Koume and Kotake, collectively known as Twinrova, in their scheme to revive the King of Evil, Ganon.

Flame of Sorrow[]

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

"By extending the reach of the Dark Realm, Veran has spread sorrow across the land. Soon, the Flame of Sorrow will ignite! Ho ho ho ho ho!"
— Twinrova
The Flame of Sorrow

The Flame of Sorrow was lit by the Sorceress of Shadows, Veran, by causing great sorrow amongst the populace of the land of Labrynna. To accomplish this, she kidnaps Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, and uses her powers to travel back 400 years into Labrynna's past to reap sorrow amongst the people and create an "Age of Darkness" in Labrynna. Although she is eventually killed by Link at the Black Tower, the sorrow she created passes through the Black Tower and on to Twinrova in the Room of Rites, lighting the Flame of Sorrow.

Flame of Destruction[]

"Onox has fallen, but the damage he has done to this land burns on in the Flame of Destruction! When this flame lights the dark, our wish shall be granted! Hya, ha, ha, ha!"
— Twinrova
The Flame of Destruction

The Flame of Destruction was lit by the evil General Onox, by sinking the Temple of Seasons into the subterranean world of Subrosia and throwing the seasons of the land of Holodrum into chaos, causing mass destruction across the land. To this end, he kidnaps Din, the Oracle of Seasons, and imprisons her in order to sink the Temple of Seasons and throw the seasons into chaos without her guidance. Although Link defeats Onox in both his human and true form in his castle, Onox's efforts succeed in lighting the Flame of Destruction in the Room of Rites, fulfilling his purpose to Twinrova's plot.

Flame of Despair[]

"We've found you, Princess Zelda! Hope for the people? We'll snuff it out! And you shall light the Flame of Despair!"
— Twinrova
The Flame of Despair

The Flame of Despair is lit when Princess Zelda, a source of hope for the people, is captured by Twinrova. With the lighting of this third and final flame, all that is needed to bring Ganon back from the dead is the sacrifice of Zelda. Link was able to thwart this plot by traveling to the Room of Rites and battling Twinrova. After Link defeats Twinrova, she sacrifices herself in Zelda's stead to revive the King of Evil. However, because Twinrova was the sacrifice instead of Zelda, only a mindless, insane form of Ganon was revived. After a furious battle, Link is able to defeat the Evil King. With Twinrova and Ganon defeated, the Room of Rites begins to collapse, and Link and Zelda escape the destruction.
