The Golden Scale is an item from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This special gold scale, encased in a green sphere (though in the artwork, it appears a pure amber color), is an upgrade to the Silver Scale that extends the allotted time for diving to 9 seconds, allowing Link to dive deeper into bodies of water. Enemies inhabiting bodies of water such as Blue Tektites will drop useful items into the water upon their defeat; these can be reached when Link uses the Golden Scale to dive after them. The Golden Scale is not needed to complete the game.
Link is given the Golden Scale by the owner of the Lake Hylia Fishing Pond as a prize for catching a 14 pound (6 kg) fish or bigger. Normally, this can only be done when Link is an adult.
Link can use the Golden Scale to dive to the bottom of the pool inside the Lakeside Laboratory, impressing the Lake Scientist enough to present him with a Piece of Heart. If this is attempted when Link is a youth, he is too short of stature to touch the bottom of the pool.

The Golden Scale appears as Princess Ruto's Level 2 Zora Scale and befitting its origins it has a Water Elemental Attribute.
