Gooma as he appears in-game

Gooma (グーマ Gūma?) is the boss of the Ocean Palace, the fifth dungeon in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. He is a giant humanoid monster that attacks with a Ball and Chain. The name "Gooma" was already used in the Japanese localization of the game for the Guma. In the Japanese original, Gooma's name is "Jianto", or simply "Giant". Interestingly in his artwork, Gooma bears resemblance to the Minotaur, a legendary creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull, known primarily from Greek mythology. According to the Playing with Power section for the game, Gooma was meant to be a troll.

He was only present in the NES version of the game, as in the FDS version, he was replaced with a second Helmethead.

Battle[]

Gooma's attack pattern is predictable and easy to dodge using the Jump Spell, but his flail deals tremendous amounts of damage and knocks Link back should he be hit. Because Gooma's head is invulnerable, Link must hit his body with a sword attack to damage him.
