Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

In the beginning of the game, Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree, but Mido will not let him pass to the Great Deku Tree's Meadow unless he equips a sword and shield. Once Link finds the Kokiri Sword and buys a Deku Shield, however, Mido bitterly allows him to pass. After traveling through a winding corridor of rocks, inhabited by several Deku Babas, Link reaches the Great Deku Tree's Meadow. It is an expansive, grassy clearing in the forest where Link and Navi are made to take part in their first trial together: entering the Deku Tree and slaying Queen Gohma, the source of a curse placed on the Great Deku Tree. Upon doing this, however, the Great Deku Tree informs the two that he was doomed from the start and destined to wither no matter what the outcome of their trial was. Despite this, he manages to give Link the Kokiri Emerald and tell him to travel to Hyrule Castle to speak with Princess Zelda before withering and dying. With this advice, Link and Navi flee Kokiri Forest and head for Hyrule Castle.

When Link awakens from his seven year slumber in the Sacred Realm, he learns that his childhood friend, Saria, is being held captive in the Forest Temple. When he arrives in Kokiri Forest to save her, he finds that the sacred woods are infested by evil creatures, and that the Kokiri are forced to remain inside their houses. After Link defeats Phantom Ganon, however, the Deku Tree Sprout begins growing in the Great Deku Tree's Meadow, and peace returns to Kokiri Forest.
