A Guma as it appears in-game
A Guma as it appears in-game

Gumas (グマ Guma?) are enemies from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. They are among the tougher enemies Link finds early in his quest, more or less equivalent to the Orange Iron Knuckle in power. Gumas can be found in palaces, where they throw endless streams of maces into the air in an arc. However, they have no armor and are relatively easy to defeat once Link manages to get underneath the barrage of thrown maces. Link gains 50 experience for defeating one.

These monsters were never given official names in the English translation. The English translation gave the name to Gooma, which did not exist in the original Japanese version. There seems to be a connection between Gumas and Gooma - both are large, thick bodied monsters who fight with maces, and Gumas are common in the 5th palace (where Gooma is the boss) after having been absent from the 3rd and 4th.
