Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

When Link ventures to the Southern Swamp, he comes upon an area known as the Woods of Mystery. Here he rescues Koume, after following a Monkey who shows him the proper way to go. After he does so, he is approached by three Monkeys who ask Link to save their brother, who has been taken prisoner at the Deku Palace. When Link arrives at the Palace, he finds that the monkey is locked in a cage in the Royal Chamber. The Deku King has imprisoned him for kidnapping the Deku Princess, since he was the last one seen with her. In actuality, however, the Imprisoned Monkey was helping the Deku Princess enter Woodfall Temple; when the Princess saw the Swamp filling with poison water, she decided to travel to the temple to find the source of the problem. However, while there, she was kidnapped by Odolwa and taken captive.

Link buys Magic Beans from the Bean Seller in a Hidden Hole underneath the Deku Palace, and uses them to sneak into the upper floors of the Inner Palace Garden. He manages to stay out of sight, and ultimately reaches a hidden passage leading to the inside of the Monkey's cage. Once there, the Imprisoned Monkey explains the situation and teaches Link the "Sonata of Awakening", a song sacred to the Deku, and the key needed to enter the Woodfall Temple. The two are discovered, however, and Link is thrown out while the Deku King orders that the Monkey be punished by being lowered into a pot of boiling water over and over.

After Link defeats Odolwa and saves the Deku Princess, he returns her to the Palace, and she screams at her father and demands he release the falsely accused Monkey. The Deku King does so, and apologizes for the misunderstanding. The Monkey forgives the Deku King.

The Imprisoned Monkey is later seen during the end credits, standing beside the Deku Royal Family in the Royal Chamber.
