Kaneli is a character from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. He is a Rito who can be found at Rito Village in the Tabantha Frontier region of Hyrule. Kaneli is the elderly Rito Chieftain who currently leads the Rito, he gives Link the main quest "Divine Beast Vah Medoh".
Appearance & Personality[]
Unlike most of the Rito, Kaneli has a distinct owl-like appearance, he is wise and knowledgeable of Hyrulean history. He is shown to be aware that the Ancient Sheikah created the Divine Beast Vah Medoh and it can only be controlled by the Champions and their descendants. He recognizes the Sheikah Slate and its connection to the Champions. He at first believes Link to be a Champion like Revali, but he quickly dismisses the idea as he believes all the Champions where killed during the Great Calamity one hundred years earlier. He concludes that Link is a descendant who inherited the Sheikah Slate as he is unaware that the Hylian Champion was injured and had been healing in the Shrine of Resurrection for a century. He is aware that Revali was killed during the Great Calamity but is unaware of the circumstances of Revali's death as he is unaware that Revali was killed by Windblight Ganon, as he wonders what kind of force could defeat someone as talented as Revali. He often tells the fledgling Rito stories and legends of the past. Though he is leader of the Rito, some of the younger adult Rito like Harth and Teba stubbornly chose to ignore Kaneli's warnings against approaching Vah Medoh and it is implied that he has lost respect among some of the adult Rito presumably due to his old age.
Quest[]
Nevertheless, before the reappearance of Vah Medoh, most of the Rito seem to have regarded his tales as mere stories and myths. Teba and Harth also dismissed his warning attempts against confronting Vah Medoh. Believing that Link can control Vah Medoh as he is of a Champion's bloodline, he explains that he attempted to dissuade Teba and Harth from confronting Vah Medoh, but they refused to listen to reason and Harth was injured by the beast, while Teba managed to escape unharmed. He states that he fears that Teba is currently preparing to confront the beast alone and asks Link to assist him, as he believes they may have a chance of stopping Vah Medoh if they work together. He suggests Link talk to Teba's wife Saki as she may know her husband's whereabouts.
