"Mako is called the brains of the ship and the king of invention. He may look like a weakling, but his glasses give him keen eyesight, and he's unstoppable when mad."
Figurine

Mako is a recurring character in the Legend of Zelda series. He is considered to be the brains of Tetra's Pirates, and is quite an inventor.

Appearances[]

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker[]

Mako is first introduced as a member of Tetra's Pirates. He does not look menacing, but his glasses enhance his eyesight, and he is unstoppable when provoked. He keeps a knife hidden in the book he carries.

During Ganondorf's Endless Night, it is Mako who asks Gonzo what the password is to get into their pirate ship. Incidentally, this is how Link learns the password and enters the ship after overhearing the answer.

Interestingly, a man resembling Mako appears in a painting in Hyrule Castle depicting members of the Royal Family of Hyrule, each of whom bears a likeness to one of the seven pirates. The man in the painting that resembles Mako also resembles Minister Potho from The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures[]

Mako appears during the Navi Trackers mini-game in the Japanese release of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass[]

Mako reappears as a member of Tetra's Pirates. He is seen at the beginning of the game, and once more at the end, as Link and Tetra are reunited with the crew.

Theory[]

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

Interestingly, there are many similarities between Mako and Shad, a member of the Resistance from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Both wear circular eyeglasses, and keep a small dagger in their books. This may be more than an allusion; Mako is a member of Tetra's pirate crew who are implied to be the descendants of the royal servants. Shad is one of the members of the Resistance, who indirectly serve the Royal Family, and according to the game's official strategy guide, his father worked as a butler in the royal palace. It is plausible that the two could share a common ancestor, or could be the same person in the parallel universes. Also, Mako is a species of salt-water shark, and a "Shad" is a species of fresh-water fish, possibly alluding to their differing moral values.
