"I am the first knight, Max. So a human can break this island's seal...To enter the king's temple, you must draw the secret crest on the corridor door. Discover the crest, and the great corridor door will open for you. You must solve the riddle written on the tablet in the corridor. I will open the entrance to the corridor. Now, be on your way [...] Ah. So you solved the riddle and opened the corridor door. Go forth and slay the monster that broke the king's rest. Meet the king."
— Max

Max is a character from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. One of the Four Knights of the Cobble Kingdom, he was the first ranked of the order during his lifetime.

During the events of Phantom Hourglass, Max, along with the rest of the knights, has long since passed away. Link encounters Max's ghost in Mutoh's Temple on the Isle of Ruins. Max is shocked that a non-Cobble was able to break the seal on the island and enter Mutoh's Temple. He goes on to tell Link that he needs to draw the sacred crest on the corridor door, and hints that the answer can be found by reading the riddle written on a tablet in the corridor. If Link can successfully solve the riddle, Max allows him to pass and fight Eox. After slaying the evil monster, Link is granted an audience by King Mutoh who gives him the Pure Metal, Aquanine.

Etymology[]

It is probable that Max is named after Mack, one of the Carpenters from The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. This seems likely because the Four Knights of the Cobble Kingdom as a whole seem to be based off of the Carpenters, seeing as there are four in each group and the knights serve King Mutoh while the Carpenters serve Mutoh.
