History[]
Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
Some time after the Ancient Sages banished Ganondorf to the Twilight Realm, Zant broke the Mirror of Twilight into four individual shards, and the mirror's stand was hidden beneath a statue of what appears to be the Gerudo Goddess of the Sand. When Link arrives at the Mirror Chamber, he defeats the Shadow Beasts that ambush him and uses the Spinner to uncover the spot where the mirror had been. However, Midna is horrified to see only a fourth of the mirror on its stand. The Ancient Sages then appear and explain the events leading up to this point and reveal that the three remaining shards are located in the snowy mountain heights, an ancient grove, and in the heavens. Upon finding all of the shards, Midna comments that the fact that Zant could not utterly destroy the Mirror of Twilight proves that he is not the true ruler of the Twili. Link and Midna then return to the Mirror Chamber to reassemble the mirror, which they then use to access the Twilight Realm and confront Zant.
After the defeat of Ganondorf, Link and Princess Zelda are seen in the Mirror Chamber as Midna returns to the Twilight Realm. As she leaves, however, she sheds a single tear and pushes it onto the Mirror of Twilight, causing it to shatter into many tiny pieces, keeping anybody from reassembling the mirror and reconnecting Hyrule to the Twilight Realm.
