Biography[]
Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
After Zelda is taken beneath the clouds, Owlan, if spoken to, will give Link a Wooden Shield to aid him in his search for her. At one point, Link must search out the spirit of the skies Levias. Owlan, being an expert on the subject of Levias, tells Link about how the flying whale has been acting strangely lately, and how it attacks anyone who comes near it. He suggests that Link obtain some Pumpkin Soup from the Lumpy Pumpkin in order to catch Levias' attention, and then utilize a special flying technique known as the Spiral Charge to attack the parasite infesting it. Owlan grants Link permission to use it, despite not being a fully-educated Knight, after he passes a small flight test.
Later, Owlan asks Link to find a new species of plant for him. By dowsing for an undiscovered breed of plant-life, Link is eventually lead to Oolo, one of the Kikwis. Oolo is tired of always living in fear of monster attacks, and wishes to live elsewhere. Link convinces him to come with him to Skyloft, where he is brought before Owlan. Owlan is dumbstruck by this new discovery, though he is unsure of whether to classify it as flora or fauna. As a reward, Link obtains five Gratitude Crystals.

Etymology[]
As many residents of Skyloft seem to be named after birds, it is likely that Owlan is named after the owl.
