The "monster" from the Japanese version of The Adventure of Link

The River Devil is an enemy from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. This enemy is unique among the enemies of the Legend of Zelda series, in that it is more of an obstacle rather than an actual foe. It resembles a blackened, dead tree and blocks the only road which connects the northern and southern halves of Hyrule. The residents of the Town of Nabooru speak of it in fear. If Link approaches the River Devil and plays the Flute, he can remove the obstruction and continue his quest. Strangely enough, the River Devil not only had a different sprite on the Japanese Famicom Disk System version, but it was simply known as a "monster" rather than a devil creature.
