"Oh, just look at her. What a ship! Such a proud beauty... Time loses all meaning when I gaze upon her. Oh, if she were only mine..."
Goronbeck

The S.S. Linebeck is the ship Link uses in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. The S.S. Linebeck is a steamship owned by and named after its captain, Linebeck. A medium sized ship, it has two paddlewheels on its side providing propulsion, allowing the ship to be sailed without the use of the wind. Link can collect a selection of ship parts throughout the game, allowing him to change the appearance of the S.S. Linebeck. The ship can be personalized at the Shipyard at Mercay Island.

History[]

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

After Link rescues Linebeck from the Temple of the Ocean King, they use the ship to explore the World of the Ocean King in search of the Ghost Ship.

The S.S. Linebeck is destroyed and sinks to the bottom of the sea in the aftermath of Link's final battle with Bellum. Uncharacteristically, Linebeck wishes for his ship to return, and the Ocean King brings back the ship for him without any visible damage, rather than the treasure he had originally planned to wish for. It is seen during the final cutscene, sailing away from Tetra's Pirate Ship. Presumably, this is how the Linebeck family reached New Hyrule.

Spoiler warning: Spoilers end here.

Usage[]

When sailing, Link can set the course of the ship and help defend the ship from sea faring enemies while Linebeck concentrates on sailing the ship. Sometimes, the player can encounter enemy ships or Jolene, a fearsome female pirate. Upon engagement with these enemies, Link must fight them in the ship's hold. When Link buys the cannon, it is fired by tapping on either the ocean or specific targets. The bombs fired by the cannon have a limited range, but have minor homing capabilities for ease of use.

Ship Parts[]

Main article: Ship Parts

The S.S. Linebeck can be remodeled with different parts which Link can find around the World of the Ocean King. If more parts are used from the same set, the ship's stamina goes up. While most sets yield the same increase in stamina, rare gold ship parts increase the ship's stamina at a greater rate. While extremely rare, gold ship parts can be received by any means regular ship parts are found. Another way gold ship parts can be received is to obtain "Big Plays" in Battle Mode. For every four that Link completes, he receives a gold ship part from Fuzo on Cannon Island.

As the game progresses, the ship receives the cannon to fight off enemies and the Salvage Arm to lift treasure from the ocean floor in a randomised minigame.
