The Smotherwing Butterfly is an item from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Link can cook with it and monster parts to create a Fireproof Elixir which grants the Flame Guard effect that grants temporary resistance to the high temperatures volcanic areas of Death Mountain and Eldin Canyon as well as the final portion of the Shrine Quest "Test of Will". It is also used to upgrade the Flamebreaker Helm, Armor and Boots set via Great Fairies. They are less common than Fireproof Lizards but produce Fireproof Elixir with a higher level Flame Guard effect. Their markings camouflage them as they resemble volcanic ash and embers making spotting them difficult thus the Sheikah Sensor+ upgrade is useful for locating them provided Link has taken or purchased its picture from Symin. Beedle also sells them at certain Stables thus removing the need to catch them which generally requires protection from the volcanic heat. Lizalfos occasionally feed on Smotherwing Butterflies that fly near them using their long tongues thus Lizalfos native to the regions they inhabit are presumably their natural predators.
