Appearances[]

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past[]

Squirrels run across the path to the Master Sword and are an answer to a clue in the quest for the Whirlwind Sword Attack in the Game Boy Advance port.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess[]

One Squirrel runs around Ordona Province, often taking notice of Link and his actions and looking at him curiously. Later, after Link has been transformed into a Wolf and defeats all the enemies surrounding his house, the Squirrel will call out to Link from his doorstep just before he leaves to check his hometown, thank him, and inform him of his ability to talk to animals while in Wolf form. Interestingly, after this the squirrel disappears from Ordon Village.

A Bushy-Tailed Squirrel in the Hyrule Compendium in Breath of the Wild

In this game, the eponymous subspecies of squirrel is known as the Bushy-Tailed Squirrel. Squirrels are commonly found in forests of the Great Plateau, Hyrule Field or Hyrule Ridge regions, moving in trees or foraging on the ground for food. However they may appear in other areas such as three that appear on the middle of Floria Bridge. In Breath of the Wild, Link can hunt squirrels like other wildlife, they drop acorns. They are quite flighty and will quickly flee from Link if they detect his presence. Squirrels often grab acorns or Chickaloo Tree Nuts lying on the ground thus they sometimes act as competition for Link when he is trying to gather said items. However they will only drop acorns when killed even if they collect a Chickaloo Tree Nut though they may drop the nuts they store in their cheeks when surprised in an adorable display of shock.

Link can take their picture with the Camera Rune to add them to the Hyrule Compendium where they appear as entry number 009 in the Compendium's "Creatures" section. They can carry nuts they collect in their cheeks, though according to the Hyrule Compendium may drop the nuts when surprised in an adorable display of shock.
