- "Let's have a little training game, shall we?"
- — Russell
The Training Game is a recurring mini-game in the Legend of Zelda series. It involves Link hitting one or more opponents as many times as he can using his Sword before he is hit three times.
Appearances[]
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker[]
The Training Game can be done with Orca on Outset Island. If Link hits Orca 100 times, he will receive 50 Rupees and will henceforth be referred to as a "knight", rather than a "page". If he hits Orca 300 times, he receives 100 Rupees and is called a "swordsman". If Link hits Orca 500 times, he receives a Piece of Heart. If Link hits Orca 1000 times, he will become "Orca's Master". Hitting Orca with a Parry counts as as two sword strikes. This mini-game can be made easier by changing the L-targeting mode to "switch". When Orca attacks, Link can defend with his Shield or dodge with a back flip or side jump.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass[]
The Training Game can be done with the Self-proclaimed Hero aboard the Prince of Red Lions. If Link manages to hit the Self-proclaimed Hero 100 times, he will receive a Heart Container the first time he does so and a random Treasure all times afterward. If he manages to hit the Self-Proclaimed Hero 200 times after getting the Heart Container he will receive a random Ship Part.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks[]
The Training Game can be done with three Hyrulean Soldiers in Hyrule Castle. If Link can strike a combined total of 60 hits against the soldiers, the captain of the soldiers, Russell, will give Link a Heart Container. If Link can strike the soldiers more then 900 times, Russell bestows Link with the title of "captain" and will address Link as such throughout the rest of the game. Alfonzo makes reference to this game when talking to Ferrus, stating he was called a legendary swordsman after he hit the soldiers 900 times.
