- "Vire is a little devil that controls Keeses. When Link cuts it with his sword, it turns into two Keeses. Keeses have little attacking power, but Vire is stronger."
- — The Legend of Zelda manual
Vires are recurring enemies in the Legend of Zelda series. They are evil, bat-like creatures with small wings that keep them floating in the air. They attack by slowly approaching Link, attacking, and then running away quickly if he retaliates.
Appearances[]
The Legend of Zelda[]
Vires are blue, bat-like demons. They appear in Levels 4, 6 and 9 in the First Quest, and in Levels 5, 6 and 9 in the Second Quest. They walk up and down slowly, but when moving from left to right they are quicker. They also jump as they walk left and right. If slain with a weapon weaker than the Magical Sword, a Vire splits into two red Keese. The Magical Sword and other weapons of equal strength kill them outright, leaving rupees, bombs, or heats behind..
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening[]
Vires appear in Turtle Rock, the eighth and final dungeon in the game. They spit fireballs at Link in a V pattern several times, then fly rapidly toward him. They dart backwards if Link swings his sword at them. Link can try to intercept them during their dives with his sword, or try to get close enough to hit them before they dart away. After taking enough damage from the sword, Vires split into two large Keese which dive at Link and continue offscreen. The Vire will then reappear as soon as Link exits and re-enters the room. The Magic Rod kills Vire outright, and prevents them from reappearing until Link has visited several other rooms.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons[]
A Vire serves as the mini-boss of the Mermaid's Cave and Ancient Ruins in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, respectively. He is depicted as the henchman of Veran or General Onox, depending on in which game the original file is being played. In a linked game, Vire will return and attempt to hinder Link further; however he is permanantly killed in the linked game, rather than simply wounded.
Theory[]
Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.
The leaders of Keese Swarms in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures bear a striking resemblance to Vires and may in fact be them.
