The Wii U is a home video game console from Nintendo. It is Nintendo's sixth home console, and is the successor to the Wii. It was initially announced in late 2009 under the working title "Zii", [1] with details being revealed during E3 2011.
The console features a controller, dubbed the Wii U GamePad, with a 6.2 inch touch screen. The Wii U GamePad features an inward-facing camera, gyroscope, accelerometer, two analog sticks, and face buttons, and allows the player to switch between the controller and the TV for playing games. It also includes an NFC touchpad with which Amiibo figurines can be used in games.
A more traditional controller known as the "Wii U Pro Controller" is sold separately. The Pro Controller is a more traditional controller, taking aspects off of the Wii U GamePad, minus the screen and amiibo touchpad and appearing more of a "professional" controller, much like the Dualshock series on Sony consoles and the Xbox Controller series on Microsoft consoles. Both the GamePad and Pro Controller are supported throughout Wii U games, but not supported through Wii games.
The Wii Remote (and Wii Remote Plus) and all of its accessories (Nunchuk, Classic Controller, Wii Motion Plus) are also compatible with the Wii U, appearing of use in many Wii U games, including Hyrule Warriors, as well as its normal use when playing Wii games. Although GameCube controllers are not fully supported for the Wii U, a USB attachment can be bought, however, it can only be used in the game Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, while other games do not accept this controller, including Wii games.
A technical demo known as Zelda HD, featuring high-definition graphics in the style of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, was shown at E3 2011 as well. The console will also feature backward compatibility for Wii games, including games that make use of its accessories; however, it is not backward compatible with Nintendo GameCube games, which are planned to be available for download via the Virtual Console.
