The Wooden Sword is a recurring sword in the Legend of Zelda series. It is the first sword Link obtains in games in which it appears.

At the start of the game, Link enters a cave in the northwest of Origin and is presented with the weapon by the Old Man. When all of Link's Heart Containers are full, the Wooden Sword can shoot Sword Beams.

Curiously, the Wooden Sword is referred to simply as the "Sword" in the introduction screen. It serves as Link's primary weapon until he has acquired enough Heart Containers to allow him to wield the White Sword. In both the First and Second Quests, it is possible to get the White Sword before Level 1 by finding the secret Heart Containers. Interestingly, the sword's handle will change to the color of the current tunic Link is wearing.

Originally, the Wooden Sword was actually intended to be among Link's equipment from the very start of the game, but it was removed under Shigeru Miyamoto's request due to wanting to encourage the player to communicate with the game to find various secrets. As such, it was replaced with the Old Man supplying Link with the sword.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

Link is given the Wooden Sword by Impa after Veran possesses Nayru, to aid him in his quest to defeat Veran. Link can eventually obtain two stronger swords, the Noble Sword and the Master Sword.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

The Wooden Sword is needed in order to enter the grove of the Maku Tree in Horon Village. Link has to pass the trials in a cave known as the Hero's Cave to obtain the sword. As in Oracle of Ages, the Noble Sword and the Master Sword are also obtainable.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Near the beginning of the game, Rusl leaves the Wooden Sword in Link's House after he has finished honing it. With this weapon, Link demonstrates various sword fighting skills on the training dummy outside his house, while the village children watch. Link gives it to the children shortly before he is transformed for the first time, the day after using it to rescue Talo from the bokoblins in Faron Woods. On the day Link is supposed to leave to go to Hyrule Castle, Talo persuades Link to give him the Wooden Sword so he can learn how to defend himself from monsters. As a result, Link is rendered defenseless when King Bulblin and his forces attacks Link, Ilia, and Colin at the Spirit's Spring. After being transformed into a Wolf, Wolf Link later acquires the Ordon Sword as a replacement, along with the Ordon Shield from Ordon Village.

Later, when Link reaches the Twilight-covered Eldin Province, he finds the Wooden Sword broken and stuck in the ground. It is from this that Link, as a wolf, learns the Youth's Scent. The Wooden Sword is never seen again.

Hyrule Warriors

In the opening cutscene, Link is seen wielding a Wooden Sword and Shield when training.

An 8-bit version of the Wooden Sword and Shield, known as the 8-Bit Wooden Sword, appears as a weapon set for Link to use (albeit much larger due to the game's 3D format). Link also wields the 8-Bit Wooden Sword if wielding the 8-Bit Fairy, and he (and other characters) can sometimes be seen wielding it during missions in the Master Quest Map. It also appears in Link's Adventure Mode sprite.

The Twilight Princess incarnation of the Wooden Sword also appears as four badges (Wooden Sword I, Wooden Sword II, Wooden Sword III, and Wooden Sword IV) for adding new combo attacks to characters' second weapon movesets: Link's Magic Rod, Impa's Naginata, Lana's Spear, and Zelda's Baton.

Hyrule Warriors Legends

The Twilight Princess Wooden Sword badges also appear for Ganondorf's Trident moveset. The 8-Bit Wooden Sword, though, is omitted.
